Four Years of MX Master

Derek has used MX Master mice since the 2S in 2020. He upgraded to the 3 in 2021 and to the 3S in 2023. The upgrades were not necessary — the 2S and 3 worked correctly — but each iteration improved something real. The 3S added quiet clicks that Derek did not know he cared about until his partner mentioned the clicking during a conference call. He ordered the 3S the same day.

The Silent Click Upgrade

The MX Master 3S has silent clicking that is 90% quieter than the MX Master 3. In isolation this sounds like a minor feature. In practice, it removes the clicking from every call Derek takes, every quiet working session, and every moment where desk sounds were a background awareness. Derek mentions this to Kyle on every video call Kyle complains about background noise. Kyle is still using a $15 mouse.

The Scroll Wheel

The MagSpeed electromagnetic scroll wheel is the feature most people mention and Derek agrees it is correct. The wheel can switch between ratcheted click-per-line scrolling and free-spinning momentum scrolling. Derek uses free-spin for long documents and ratcheted for precision work. The switch is a single click on the wheel itself. After four years, the wheel mechanism works identically to day one.

Multi-Device and Battery

The 3S connects to up to three devices simultaneously and switches between them with a button on the bottom. Derek uses this between his work laptop and personal Mac. The switch takes approximately one second. Battery life is approximately 70 days per charge — Derek charges it once every two months and does not think about it otherwise.

Best for you if...

  • Work in shared or quiet environments where click noise matters
  • Use multiple computers and want to switch one mouse between them
Not for you if...
  • Primarily use a trackpad or touchpad and prefer that interface
  • Left-handed — the MX Master is right-handed only
  • Want a smaller, lighter mouse for travel

Pros

  • Silent click removes noise from shared environments
  • MagSpeed scroll wheel works correctly after 4 years
  • 70-day battery life per charge
  • 3-device Bluetooth switching
  • Ergonomic shape reduces wrist fatigue over long sessions

Cons

  • Right-handed only — no left-handed version
  • $100 price point higher than functional alternatives
  • Size and weight not ideal for travel
