Why This Monitor

The LG 27UN850 does three things correctly that monitors at this price point ($349-449) don't always do: factory-calibrated color accuracy, USB-C connection with 90W laptop charging, and 4K resolution without the ghosting issues that plague some IPS panels in this tier.

I have been recommending it to Kyle since 2024. Kyle now owns one. His video call quality improved visually from the switch. His color accuracy for the occasional design work he does is significantly better. The monitor has been in daily use on my own desk since 2023.

The Factory Calibration Matters

Every monitor ships with color that drifts from accurate — some slightly, some significantly. Factory calibration means the manufacturer has tested and adjusted the monitor's color output to match a standard. The LG 27UN850 includes a factory calibration report with each unit.

For most work purposes, color accuracy below a certain threshold is academic. For any work involving color decisions — design, photo editing, video — factory calibration removes a source of uncertainty. The monitor's colors are correct out of the box rather than requiring third-party calibration.

USB-C Single Cable

The USB-C connection handles video, data, and 90W power delivery through one cable from the laptop. The practical result: a single cable on the desk instead of three. The cable management implications are significant — fewer cables, cleaner routing, faster setup and breakdown if the monitor is shared or moved.

The 4K Question

At 27 inches, 4K (3840x2160) provides noticeably sharper text rendering than 1440p or 1080p. For sustained reading and writing work — which WFH involves significantly more of than most people account for when buying monitors — the text clarity improvement is real and daily.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the LG 27UN850 support 4K at 60Hz over USB-C?
Yes — USB-C 3.1 Gen 2 supports 4K at 60Hz, including the 90W power delivery simultaneously. Verify your laptop's USB-C port supports the required bandwidth.
How does the LG 27UN850 compare to the Dell UltraSharp U2722D?
Both are excellent options. The Dell has a slightly more premium build and better USB-C hub. The LG is typically $50-100 less at equivalent configurations. Both have factory calibration. The Dell is preferable for color-critical professional work; the LG is excellent for general WFH use.
Is 27 inches the right size for a single monitor?
For most WFH use cases, yes. 27 inches at 4K provides sufficient screen real estate for multitasking without requiring head movement to see screen edges. Larger sizes (32"+) can work well but require positioning the monitor further away, which changes desk depth requirements.
What laptop works with the LG 27UN850 USB-C connection?
Any laptop with a USB-C port that supports DisplayPort Alt Mode and USB Power Delivery. Most modern MacBooks, Dell XPS, ThinkPad, and HP Spectre models support this. Older laptops with USB-C ports may only support charging, not video — verify your laptop specifications.
Does the LG 27UN850 work with a monitor arm?
Yes — standard VESA 100x100mm mounting. Compatible with Ergotron LX, Ergotron HX, and most third-party arms. The monitor weighs approximately 13 lbs, well within the LX arm's 25 lb maximum.
