Elgato Key Light Review (2026) — Derek's Honest Take
Our Verdict
The video call upgrade Derek put off for two years and regrets not doing sooner. Eliminated the "dark webcam" problem permanently.

Derek's home office setup has been a priority for four years. He upgraded his monitor arm, chair, desk, keyboard, and mouse before addressing his video call lighting. His reasoning: lighting was not part of the core workstation. It was a presentation concern. He upgraded anyway when a client mentioned his camera looked dark during a presentation. He ordered the Key Light that evening.
Kyle had the same problem Derek mentioned it to him twice. Kyle has not ordered a Key Light. Derek no longer mentions it.
What It Actually Fixed
Derek's office faces south with a window on the left side. Before the Key Light, morning light created severe left-side overexposure and right-side shadow on video. The Key Light placed on the right side at approximately the same height as the webcam and set to 5500K created even diffused lighting that eliminated both the shadow and the exposure problem. The change is visible in the first call after setup.
The App Control
The Key Light is controlled via Elgato's Control Center app and optionally via Stream Deck if you have one. Derek adjusts brightness and color temperature from his Mac menu bar without reaching for the light. He typically sets it to 5500K and 60% brightness for daytime calls, 3500K and 40% for evening calls. The app remembers settings between sessions.
One Light vs Two
One Key Light eliminates the dark camera problem for most setups. Two Key Lights — one on each side — eliminates shadows entirely and produces the "podcast studio" look that reads as professional production quality. Derek uses one. He considered two but found one sufficient for the calls he takes. The incremental improvement from the second light is real but marginal compared to the improvement from the first.
