How Derek Reviews Products

Derek has tested more than 200+ products over years of active evaluation. Every score published on Desk Made Simple reflects a documented evaluation process with specific criteria, minimum evaluation periods, and a set of disqualifying conditions that remove a product from consideration regardless of its other scores. This page explains that process in full.

The goal is simple: when Derek recommends something, you should be able to read exactly why, see the methodology behind the score, and decide whether that methodology applies to your situation. A 9.0 for one type of user may be a 7.0 for another. Derek's reviews tell you which situation you're in.

Evaluation Period

Minimum: 6 weeks minimum. This is not a guideline — it is a hard floor. No verdict is published before the minimum evaluation period has elapsed. Reviews that reach a preliminary conclusion before the minimum period are held until the evaluation is complete.

Scoring Criteria

Every product is scored across five dimensions. The weights below reflect their relative importance to the overall score. A product that scores perfectly on low-weight dimensions but fails a high-weight dimension cannot score above 7.5.

The Six-Week Minimum

Derek spends a minimum of six weeks with every product before publishing a verdict. This is not arbitrary — it reflects the observation that most products reveal their actual character somewhere between week three and week five. The first two weeks are the honeymoon. Week six is reality. Reviews published before six weeks of use are marked as preliminary and updated at the six-week mark.

Live Workflow Testing

All products are tested in Derek's live work environment: same desk, same cables, same daily workload. He does not create a parallel test environment because his readers will not be using their products in parallel test environments. Failure modes that appear under real conditions but not controlled conditions are the ones that matter.

Update Policy

Reviews are updated when a product has a significant change in quality, manufacturing, or market positioning. Reviews older than 18 months that have not been confirmed current carry a review-age notice. Derek does not publish reviews he cannot stand behind today.

Automatic Disqualifiers

The following conditions remove a product from consideration regardless of how it scores in other dimensions. These are not opinions — they are structural failures that make a recommendation impossible:

• Plastic joints where metal is required (automatic dock to build quality score)
• Cable routing that creates friction-based wear within the first year
• Documentation errors that cause incorrect assembly on first attempt
• Motors or mechanisms with documented failure rates above 5% within 18 months
