Ergonomics for WFH Dads: What the Research Actually Says
The ergonomic research applied specifically to the WFH parent context. Real constraints, real solutions. See full review →
Most ergonomics content is written for office workers who have dedicated workspace, consistent schedules, and no children entering the room during video calls. This is not my context.
My context: home office that is also a room my children walk through. A schedule that is structured but regularly interrupted. Video calls during which the background is sometimes perfectly composed and sometimes contains a three-year-old asking about snacks.
The ergonomic principles still apply. The implementation requires adjustment.
The Core Principles, Applied
Monitor at eye level: this matters regardless of whether a child is in the background. The neck issues accumulate whether or not you're aware of them. The Ergotron LX works in the WFH parent context exactly as it works in any other context.
Chair adjustment: this matters more in the WFH parent context because you are often sitting for long periods followed by short periods of standing, crouching, or picking up small humans. The ability to quickly adjust between sitting positions is more valuable than in a pure 9-to-5 office context. The Herman Miller Aeron handles this well; its seat height and back tension adjust in seconds.
Lighting: the WFH parent context often means using spaces not originally designed for work. Natural light is variable throughout the day. A reliable key light (Elgato Key Light (See Derek's full review →)) provides consistent illumination regardless of window position and time of day.
The Constraint That Matters
The constraint I didn't anticipate in 2021: the acoustic environment. A WFH parent workspace is not acoustically consistent. The solution is not soundproofing (too expensive, too permanent) but a good directional microphone that picks up your voice and not the background. I use the Blue Yeti in cardioid mode. Kyle uses headphone microphones, which is fine but not the same.
The kids are in school now for most of the day. The acoustic situation has improved. The monitor arm is still at eye level. Some solutions outlast the original problems.
